DEMOCRATS OF NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP ENDORSE BISS, GONG-GERSHOWITZ, PRECKWINKLE, KAEGI IN CONTESTED PRIMARIES
Rotering Narrowly Misses Endorsement for AG race with 57% of the vote
GLENVIEW, IL, JANUARY 31, 2018 – Over 120 members of the Democrats of Northfield Township, the Cook County Democratic Party’s organization representing most of Glenview, Northbrook, and Northfield, gathered on Sunday, January 28 to vote in the group’s popular Primary Endorsement Session. Focused on the upcoming contested Democratic primary races in March, the Northfield Dems voted to officially endorse: Daniel Biss for Governor; Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz for State Representative, 17th District; Toni Preckwinkle for Cook County Board President; and Fritz Kaegi for Cook County Assessor. All of the candidates received 93% of the vote, except Preckwinkle who received 96%.
“It’s an honor to receive the endorsement of the Democrats of Northfield Township,” said Daniel Biss. “Each of my campaigns has relied on a fundamental belief that when we invest in our communities, we can elect leaders who represent us and enact policies that improve our lives. And in each of my campaigns, the Democrats of Northfield Township have affirmed this faith, reminding me that it’s not just possible, but absolutely necessary to organize at the local level to create lasting progressive reform. I’m proud to be joined by such a dedicated group of people and looking forward to collaborating in the months and years ahead.”
“I’m thrilled to be endorsed by the Democrats of Northfield Township,” Gong-Gershowitz said. “It is especially meaningful for me to earn the support of the community where I have lived and raised my family for the past 15 years, and I look forward to representing them as State Representative.”
During the endorsement session, votes were also cast for the crowded Illinois Attorney General Democratic primary slate. Nancy Rotering, Highland Park Mayor, came close to winning the nomination by capturing 57% of the vote, narrowly missing the 60% margin required to claim the endorsement. Northfield Dems also did not issue an endorsement for the Cook County Treasurer race that includes Maria Pappas and Peter Gariepy. In that race, Pappas received 45% of the vote, the remainder being divided between Gariepy and no endorsement.
“The Democrats of Northfield Township often show a lot of independent and progressive thinking,” said, Tracy Katz Muhl, the unopposed candidate hoping to succeed retiring Northfield Township Committeeman Mike Kreloff in April. “The 95,000 residents in our area are typically well-informed, thoughtful, and engaged voters, making them a highly sought-after block in most IL elections.”
In addition to the contested primaries, the Democrats of Northfield Township will endorse all of the uncontested area Democrats in their respective races. For a complete list of these other candidates, please visit www.northfielddems.org o
